Preparation Guide for the Grand Canyon

When planning a trip to the Grand Canyon, it is very important to be prepared. We recommend plenty of water, especially during the summer months. Also, when considering driving, please be aware that each rim may take as long as 4 to 6 hours of drive time to reach them. Always keep your gas tank full as the next gas station may be further than you think. If your car breaks down, you may have to wait quite a while as the nearest mechanic or tow truck could be a few hours away.

If camping or spending the night at the Grand Canyon, we do recommend packing a jacket or sweater as the night can turn chilly quite quickly even in the summer. Also, access to an ATM may be limited at the West and North Rims, so please plan accordingly. We also recommend brining a picture ID, especially when checking in for one of our tours to the West Rim. This will make the check-in process go smoothly and quickly.

Grand Canyon North Rim

Since the North Rim is fairly undeveloped, we recommend planning carefully where you will fill up on gas, where you will purchase food, and where you plan to go on your trip. Again, always remember to have extra water stored in your vehicle as dehydration is common at the Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon South Rim

Although the South Rim is more developed than the other rims, we do recommend that you consider where the gas stations, restaurants and lodges when planning your next trip.

Grand Canyon West Rim

In order to travel to the West Rim, you must have vehicle that can make it over the dirt road leading to the Tribal Lands of the Hualapai. At the West Rim, there are no gas stations, but there are places to eat as well as water to drink. Please note that you must pay an entrance fee to enter the Tribal Lands unless you purchase our front-of-the-line entrance passes that are included in our Grand Canyon self-drive tours.
